Scope and Contents

Sampling of various popular songs and "light" classical pieces. Contains some duplicates from Alliker (Begin the Beguine, Deep Purple, etc.) and at least one piece is an instrumental version of a song. Among the pieces of this collection: "Dark Eyes" with an interesting guitar tab notation in the front; "Goin' Home" based on Dvorak; "In an Eighteenth Century Drawing Room" based on Mozart piano sonata; and "Liebestraum" based on Lizst, with Hawaiin guitar solo.

British advertisements for Valentine's Day lottery

Abstract

An artificially assembled collection of four lottery advertisements, publicizing what was possibly the largest lottery in Britain in 1816. The items span from approximately 1815 to 1816. The slips were likely printed in 1815, but mass distributed in 1816.

British Illustrators scrapbook

Abstract

The scrapbook which forms this collection is a bound volume containing around fifty illustrations representative of the subjects and style of nineteenth-century British book illustration. In the scrapbook are caricatures, cartoons, foreign scenes, social commentary, and hand-colored engravings.

British North American household provisions commonplace book

Broadside advertising American elk exhibition at the Lyceum Theatre, London

Abstract

In 1765, a building was erected on an adjacent site of today's Lyceum Theatre by the architect James Payne for exhibitions and, later, for other entertainments. The theatre finally became a licensed house in 1809. One of these entertainments was that of the exhibition of an American Elk in 1792, as noted in this broadside printed in 1792 in London.

Abstract

Broadus Mitchell was an educator, historian, and biographer of Alexander Hamilton. Mitchell taught economics at Hopkins, 1919-1939, and was active in political affairs and issues of social justice in Baltimore. The collection consists of some papers related to Broadus Mitchell's research for his published work, William Gregg, Factory Master of the Old South, (1928) and Mitchell's biographical materials. The papers span from 1928 to 1929 and 1979-1986.

Bruce Klein collection on Leon Fleisher

Abstract

In the 1990s Bruce Klein's company Klein Entertainment secured an agreement to the life rights for pianist Leon Fleisher to produce a dramatic film on Fleisher's life, but the film was never made the rights expired and funding could not be secured. The Bruce Klein collection on Leon Fleisher contains two film treatment proposals by Klein and clippings about Fleisher assembled by Klein for background research.

Butterfly classification manuscript in the Johann Siegfried Hufnagel schemata tradition

Abstract

Johann Siegfried Hufnagel (1724-1795) was a German parson and entomologist (lepidopterist). This item is a manuscript on the classification of butterflies and moths, in the tradition of the schemata proposed by Hufnagel and illustrated with ten original hand-coloured illustrations of butterflies. The item was once owned by Freiherr von Malsen-Ponickau or Cordula [?] Ponickau, or both. This manuscript was approximately created in 1780. The creator is unknown.

Charles Grove Haines was a Professor of Diplomatic History born in Abbottstown, Pennsylvania December 10, 1906. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence and subject files dating to Haines's time as the Director of the Bologna Center at the School of Advanced International Studies dating from 1970-1976. Abstract

This collection consists of two letters written on May 28 and December 3, 1864 from Caleb Smith to his younger brother Ethelbert Marshall Smith. The letters describe business dealings overseas during the 19th century, as well as personal matters. Caleb Smith worked in Hong Kong at a small merchant firm, and Ethelbert worked in Amoy (Xiamen, China) as the United States unnoficial Vice-Consul before moving to work at an unnamed private company.
